Gene Suhr coached high school football in Nebraska for 34 years, 31 of them as a head coach, turning two losing programs into winners and reaching the state playoffs a state-record 20 consecutive years. He then spent four seasons as offensive coordinator at Wayne State College, where his balanced run-and-pass attack led the Northern Sun Conference and ranked among the top offenses in NCAA Division II.
